Pet-safe Dye and what you should know!

Hello! This post is just to give everyone a little more information regarding the creative grooming dye jobs I’ve been doing recently.

First things first, “Is it safe for my dog?” the answer is yes! I use petsafe CrazyLiberty and Opawz brand dyes to get the colorful looks on these pups. The dyes are made from fruit and vegetable extracts so there are no concerns when it comes to adding color to any dog. The Opawz brand dye even goes as far as being food grade and edible! Both approved by the FDA so there is no cause for concern about the dye for dog safety.

Secondly, “How long does the dye last?” this depends on how often you bathe your dog, how fast their hair grows, and what colors were applied to the coat. Usually, it takes about 25 washes to remove the dye completely, but usually, clients want it shaved out before then for a fresh canvas for the new color. I do not apply lightning products to dogs so once the dye is in, that’s it. Lighter colors such as yellows, oranges, and pinks will wash out quicker than darker colors such as black, violet, and teal. Here is an example of the dye fading out over time, the dye was applied on the left on June 6, 2022, and the photo on the right is what’s left of the dye on October 25, 2022.

Finally, the dye does not stain or leave any residue unless you count my hands and shop (haha!). I apply the dye, then rinse with lukewarm water until water runs clear.  After, we blow dry to set the color- and once dry there shouldn’t be any dye to rub off on you or your furniture.

Dogs that get these type of dye jobs are not forced to do anything to achive this look and are not miserable during the process. If a dog wants to sit or lay down during the process I just go with the flow and let them whatever they are most comfortable. The dye is supposed to be fun and exciting,  not a chore for them.

Not everyone is going to dye their dogs and that’s fine but please do not let the idea of it being a scary thing for the dogs health and safety stop you and your pup from expressing yourselves! If you have concerns or worries then don’t hesitate to ask or do your own research before making your own decisions-  and don’t forget to have fun!
